The GSEU - Geological Service for Europe, in collaboration with EGEC Geothermal, organised the Session “Geothermal Now: Bridging Policy, Industry and Science for a European geothermal energy strategy” on June 13, where EuroGeoSurveys Secretary-General Julie Hollis joined the panel discussion.
Following the European Parliament’s resolution for a European geothermal energy strategy, the panellists discussed the challenges, benefits and opportunities for the mass deployment of geothermal energy to achieve EU climate goals. The challenges to be addressed are: structures to share national actions to increase geothermal investments; effective implementation of newly agreed permitting rules; uptake of innovative business models; skilling the workforce.
Julie highlighted the pan-European work in which the Geological Survey Organisations of Europe are collaboratively engaged through GSEU project. This work includes building database inventories and a pan-European atlas of geothermal potential. This data and knowledge are fundamental to derisking the development of geothermal operations that will reduce Europe's reliance on imported fossil fuels and contribute to energy security and our Net Zero goals. By informing and derisking geothermal development, EuroGeoSurveys and the GSEU project are “laying the groundwork for a more sustainable energy future for Europe”. Around 350 people attended the event in person and online.
The recording of the session is available here.
