AREAS OF EXPERTISE

GeoEnergy Resources

Main impacts

  • To improve planning, regulation and decision-making to enable a responsible and effective uptake of GeoEnergy
  • To improve alignment of cross-border GeoEnergy developments in response to clean energy and climate actions
  • To secure access to future insights and updates on GeoEnergy resulting from national and European research
  • To accelerate the efficient and competitive uptake of clean and sustainable GeoEnergy and storage technologies including geothermal energy, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage, and sustainable energy carriers (such as hydrogen)

Objectives and Tasks

The main objectives in terms of GeoEnergy resources are to provide pan-European inventories, characterisations and knowledge of geothermal energy resources, underground capacities for CO2 sequestration and temporary storage of sustainable energy carriers.

The work will build on the results of previous European assessments and the GeoERA programme. Improvements to the current status quo will be based on a more inclusive and harmonised framework for assessing resources, expanding maps and parameter datasets through new national assessments, identifying information gaps for future improvements and incorporating new resources and capacities relevant to Europe's Green Deal ambitions.

An Inventory of databases for Sustainable GeoEnergy Capacities (SGEC) is going to be created to develop a single point of access to existing (and future) national repositories and databases of detailed geological information about SGEC. The platform will be integrated into the EGDI platform.

A Pan-European online Atlas of Sustainable GeoEnergy Capacities with harmonised and generalised distribution maps and databases of known SGEC potentials is going to be created as the basis for the Pan-European online GIS atlas. The task aims to integrate information from existing and new appraisal and assessment activities.

A Knowledge and Competence Hub for Sustainable GeoEnergy Capacities is going to be created with information and tools that support harmonised assessment and evaluation of SGEC in Europe. Knowledge, capacity building, education and strategic cooperation will be established as well. The hub addresses the wider scientific and (inter)national stakeholder community.

Deliverables

  • An online platform as a centralised data access portal (in EGDI) to unlock all current and accessible national information on SGEC. This will include links to national databases and web services. These comprise appropriate vocabularies, metadata definitions, online reported specifications and user guidelines
  • An online atlas and portfolio as a harmonised and generalised pan-European synthesis and characterisation of the known potential for SGEC. This will include online references to guidelines, standards, vocabularies and metadata
  • An online knowledge and competence hub as a digital portal with information and tools supporting the appraisal and evaluation of SGEC in Europe. Organised by theme, searchable and structured by vocabularies (EGDI embedded)
